After a weekend spent looking at the family's computers (Happy Birthday to P) the summary is:
Have a regular strategy for performance - delete unwanted and temporary files, then defragment. The process for this is not too obvious in XP, unless you know what to look for.
Download - Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/
Get a Google account and download the excellent Google pack of software.
